Budget 2025 to fund New Zealand teacher practising certificates
Learn about the Budget 25 initiative reducing costs for New Zealand teachersOn 28 April 2025 the Minister of Education Hon Erica Stanford announced that the Government will provide $53.3 million to cover the costs of Teaching Council fees and levies for three financial years.
From 1 July 2025 to 1 July 2028, New Zealand teachers will not have to pay the fee when they apply for registration or renew their practising certificate.
Full time and part time teachers in schools and early learning will benefit from this commitment to reducing costs for teachers. We estimate this will be a saving of up to $550 for each New Zealand teacher who renews their practising certificate.
The funding changes come into effect from 1 July 2025 for New Zealand teacher registrations and practising certificate renewals. Anyone applying for a Limited Authority to Teach will also have their application fee covered from that date. Overseas trained teacher registration applications are not covered by this funding.
A fact sheet has been prepared providing more detail, including what is covered by the Budget 25 funding.
