Residential School Workers’ Pay Equity Claim
Learn about how you can provide feedback on the interview findings in your pay equity claimWhat’s happening in your claim
The PSA Te Pūkenga Here Tikanga Mahi (PSA) and the Ministry of Education have completed 18 interviews with residential school workers who are part of this pay equity claim.
Roles covered by the claim include residential support workers, youth workers and team leaders and those who are doing the same or substantially similar work in the following schools:
- Halswell Residential College
- Westbridge Residential School
- Salisbury School
- Ko Taku Reo
Interview insights have been summarised into an interview findings report which describes the work responsibilities of roles covered by the claim. This is called the General Areas of Responsibility (GARS) Report. There is also an New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) version of the GARs Report.
There are 11 areas of responsibility. Each area of responsibility describes the activities performed by residential school workers.
We are now coming back to all people in the claim to confirm what we have found, and to identify if anything is missing. This step in the pay equity claim process is called validation, and the validation consultation will run from 9 am Monday, 5 May to midnight Sunday, 18 May 2025.
What you need to do
We are asking you to:
- Read or view the GARs report.
- Identify any activities that are missing from the areas of responsibility or confirm you agree with what has been reported.
- Complete an online survey sharing your feedback.

Survey instructions
The survey asks you to confirm each area of responsibility or add activities that are missing. You can respond to all questions, skip some questions or even confirm you have no feedback.
You can complete the survey for a group of people or as an individual.
You will be asked to provide contact information and to confirm your role title. If you are completing a survey for a group, at least one person must agree to include their contact details.
You will also be asked for permission to be contacted about your feedback.
You do not need to complete your feedback all at once. You can come back and complete your survey at a later time if using the same device and browser.
Once you have submitted your feedback survey, you cannot complete the survey again or change your response.
We recommend having the GARs report available when answering the survey questions to check what is included in each area.
If you would like to provide feedback in a different format, please contact the PSA.
