Kaupapa Māori | Māori Medium EBITE Programme Funding Award

To be eligible, schools | kura must: 

• be state or state-integrated
• employ at least one LAT holder who is teaching or intends to teach in a Kaupapa Māori or Māori medium setting, or as a te reo Māori subject teacher in an English medium setting
• employ at least one LAT holder in a teaching role that has been publicly advertised and appointed based on merit
• attest that they can provide a robust mentoring and support programme.

To be eligible, LAT holders must: 

• be employed as a LAT holder and receiving a salary from the school | kura prior to applying for the funding award  
• be teaching or intend to teach in a Kaupapa Māori or Māori medium setting, or as a te reo Māori subject teacher in an English medium setting 
• hold a current LAT registration with the Teaching Council or be registered with the Teaching Council upon commencing study unless otherwise agreed upon with the Ministry 
• intend to enrol in an ITE programme that can be completed in two years while employed in a school | kura
• have not received a TeachNZ scholarship, funding through the School Onsite Training Programme or funding through the Teach First (Ako Mātātupu) NZ EBITE programme.

LAT holders in the process of applying for or renewing their LAT registration are also eligible for 
inclusion in a funding award application.

If the number of eligible applications exceeds the number of available awards, a selection process with a weighted scoring system will be used to determine accepted applications. 

Priority for this funding round will be given to LAT holders who are: 

• currently teaching in secondary/wharekura/Kura Tuarua settings. 
• teaching or intending to teach in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) subject areas 
• teaching or intending to teach in Level 1 or 2 immersion settings • currently employed in the school | kura full-time, or at least 0.8 Full Time Teacher Equivalent (FTTE).

LAT holders can only enrol in an ITE programme that can be completed in two years. These programmes will likely be:

• a dedicated EBITE programme
• a one-year postgraduate or graduate diploma completed part-time over two years, or
• a two-year undergraduate degree (reduced from three years) which accredits a student their first-year papers through Recognised Prior Learning (RPL).

We recommend reviewing the approved ITE programmes available and choosing a programme that is a good fit for your school | kura and LAT holder before applying. 

Principals complete the applications. This is because the principal must attest they are able to meet the funding award obligations. 

Schools | kura must understand the eligibility criteria and their obligations. They must also ensure that their LAT holders are committed to completing the ITE programme, understand their personal obligations and consent to information being provided on their behalf. 

Read the guidance document for schools | kura before completing your application. The application form will ask if you have read it.

You can include up to 10 LAT holder applicants in an application. The online application asks for the following information:

• school | kura applicant full name, position, contact number and email address
• school | kura name and ID
• LAT holder's full name, email address, LAT number (if holding a current LAT), and MOE number
• employment details, including Full Time Teacher Equivalent (FTTE) status while studying, immersion levels, and subjects taught
• the name of the chosen ITE programme.

Contact the EBITE applications team for advice if your ability to make an application is impacted by your LAT employment agreement conditions (eg fixed term or not permanent staff). You may still be eligible to apply for a funding award.
