Teacher and principal remuneration and demographics

This webpage includes an overview of teacher and principal average remuneration and data on teacher demographics and numbers. 

Average remuneration information is available by sector, for beginning teachers, and for principals of different sized schools | kura.

Average teacher remuneration levels include salary and allowances but exclude other payments such as KiwiSaver or other superannuation benefits.

Average principal remuneration levels include salary based on school size, as well as other salary components and allowances based on the number of teachers at the school, the school's equity index, experience of the principal, and whether they are leading and/or teaching in bilingual immersion settings.

Teacher demographic data includes: 

• gender and age
• ethnicity
• permanent and relief teacher percentages
• primary and secondary teacher percentages.

Teacher numbers show changes by permanent teachers, day relievers, secondary and primary teachers.
